Spaghetti Sauce with meat

This meaty spaghetti sauce uses either ground beef or Italian sausage, onion, canned tomatoes, and tomato paste, and is flavored with garlic, basil, oregano, rosemary and bay leaves.
 

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef or bulk Italian Sausage
  • 2 cups finely chopped onions*
  • 1 12-oz. can tomato paste
  • 3 28-oz. cans whole peeled tomatoes* 3 cups water
  • 3 Tbsp. minced garlic**
  • 2 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. dried basil
  • 2 Tbsp. dried oregano**
  • 3 Tbsp. chopped parsley
  • 1 to 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. dried rosemary, crushed
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 1 16-oz. pkg. spaghetti
 
Method

(Remove skin if using Italian Sausage links.) Brown meat in a skillet. Drain fat and put into a large pot. Add all ingredients except the spaghetti to the pot. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 2 hours or until desired consistency, stirring occasionally. Prepare spaghetti by package directions; serve sauce spooned over.

 

Notes: *I run the onions and tomatoes through the blender so that my children will eat them. **You can add or reduce these ingredients to fit your taste. Sauce can be divided and frozen for use up to 30 days later. Other uses: Manicotti, Rigatoni, Baked Ziti.
